The three zones of the nervous system: Red, yellow and green

By Kenneth Collins · 8 min read

“Just relax.” Three words that are easier said than done — because you can't control your nervous system by willpower. But you can learn to regulate it. Polyvagal Theory shows us exactly how.

The three zones

Red zone — Alarm

Fight-or-flight state. Heart racing, muscles tensed, breathing shallow. You are ready to act on a threat — real or not.

Anxiety and panicAnger and irritabilityChronic painSleep problems
Yellow zone — Tense

Not in acute alarm, but not at rest either. You manage, but are constantly on guard. Many people live most of their lives here without knowing it.

Easily irritatedHard to relaxShallow breathingNeck/shoulder tension
Green zone — Calm and balance

The nervous system is regulated. You can think clearly, feel connected to others, and your body can heal and recover. This is where we want you.

How to move from red to green

You can't think your way out of the red zone. But you can work with the body to signal safety to the nervous system:

Slow, deep breathing

Activates the vagus nerve and signals safety to the brain. 4 seconds in, 6 seconds out.

Proprioceptive correction

Corrects the sensors sending false danger signals to the brain. The core of the Body Correction method.

Movement

Regulates stress hormones and activates the parasympathetic nervous system. Walking is particularly effective.
